Divorced with three kids from two women Toni Payne has 1 son and Victoria Godis has a set of twins the gangling singer, 9ice, whose track ‘Gongo Aso’ remains one of the most popular songs of the 2000s, has successfully released 8 studio albums in his professional career spanning 10 years. The MOBO award winner grew up in a polygamous home; his father had five wives and nine children.Educational background9ice is not a university graduate as he used his JAMB form fee to pay for a studio session as he pursued his musical career yet he attended Abule Okuta Primary School and CMS Grammar School to earn his Secondary School Leaving Certificate which the basic requirement in Nigeria. In 2013, the singer said he has succeeded in securing an offer to study for a degree in Public Administration at the Minneapolis based Capella University although nothing much has been heard of it since then.

Unknown to many, 9ice began writing songs at just 14 years old, influenced by Fuji musicians including Pasuma as well as Ebenezer Obey, King Sunny Adé, Tatalo Alamu, Late Alhaji Ayinla Omowura and Late Alhaji Haruna Ishola. His parents only found out about his singing career a year after it started around 2000 but didn’t support him, yet he pursued his dreams and was able to make a mark on the Nigerian entertainment industry. After recording his first demo, 9ice joined a group called Mysterious Boys, with whom he did a couple of tracks before going on to form his own group, Abinibi, which is now defunct. Having recorded his first demo, Risi De Alagbaja in 1996 and his first solo song, Little Money in 2000, 9ice only became a notable name in the industry after he released his monster hit, ‘Gongo Aso’ in 2006 to cement a place as one of the biggest names in the music industry. Before then, however, his featuring on Ruggedman’s track, ‘Opomulero‘ got the attention of than a few people. In that effort, 9ice recorded songs about success, originality, partying and women, as well as the institution of marriage and gratitude.Since late 2007, 9ice has featured prominently in several shows and events, one of which was Mandela‘s 90th birthday event held at the prestigious Hyde Park in London, where he sang ‘Gongo Aso’ to the delight of guests and a large audience at the event.9ice is known for his massive use of the Yoruba language in his music, freely mixing Yoruba proverbs with English and pidgin.9ice compares himself to Youssou N’Dour, who has won a couple of Grammys with music recorded in his mother tongue, and Yvonne Chaka Chaka, whose music is also largely delivered in her language. He has been quoted as saying: ‘English language has been imposed on us but God graciously gave Yoruba language to us.’

Destination: PoliticsThough he enjoyed a beneficial relationship with top politicians including Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the past, his decision to run for an elective position was publicly hinted at during the nationwide fuel subsidy protests of January 2012.While many thought 9ice was joking at the time or speaking based on the euphoria of the moment, recent events have clearly proved that he’s neither having a rethink nor backing out of his decision to delve headlong into the murky waters of politics.

The young man joined the All Progressives Congress, the political party ruling all but one of the six states in the Southwest and is bent on vying for the party’s ticket for next year’s election.Even as he prepares for his party’s primary elections, 9ice has shown he means business by printing posters, embarking on campaign trips to the Ogbomoso North/South/Orire Federal Constituency he hopes to represent in the Federal House of Representatives.

While 9ice, whose latest musical efforts came via a double album CNN & GRA released earlier this year, is not the only entertainer plotting to occupy a seat in the Green Chambers of the House of Reps, he seems to be the most passionate at the moment.9ice is set to face off with Hon. Mulikat Akande Adeola of the PDP, who is the incumbent as far as Ogbomosho/North/South/Orire Federal Constituency is concerned. Elected into the House of Representatives in 2007 and reelected in 2011, Hon Adeola is a is a lawyer, and the Gongo Aso singer faces an uphill task displacing the two time member, whose party backed him to emerge as the House of Reps speaker, before other members thwarted the move. With the PDP becoming less popular by the day, particularly in Oyo State, 9ice might have a chance, but that is if he is able to clinch the APC ticket for the 2015 general elections.
