Federal High Court tops judiciary’s budget with N11.7bn allocation


About N11.7bn out of the N70bn allocated to the judiciary in the Federal Government’s budget will be going to the Federal High Court.
A budget document obtained from the Federal Ministry of Finance reveals that the Federal High Court’s allocation of a total of N11,745,000,000 is the highest accruable to any other court or judiciary institutions in the 2016 budget.
The Federal High Court currently has at total number of 82 judges in its 38 divisions across the federation.
The breakdown of the allocation to the court shows that out of the 11.4bn allocated to the court, the sum of N876,762,622.58 represents the consolidated salary of its judges.
The sum of N3,322,151,287.31 goes for the personnel and N4,053,917,800 for overhead.
The sum of N3,492,168,290.11 is for the capital projects to be undertaken by the court in 2016.
The Court of Appeal with about 82 justices and 17 divisions is the court with second highest allocation for 2016.
It is allocated the sum of N10,795,000,000 for the year.
Out of this amount, the sum of N831,856,348.42 goes for salaries of the justices; N2,804,143,651.58 goes for the personnel, N4,031,000,000 for overhead, and  N3,128,000,000 is for capital projects.
The state judiciary in the 36 states of the federation is allocated a total sum of N10,370,100,000 in the 2016 budget.
Of this figure N8,405,438,075.97 is for the judges’ salary while N1,964,661,924.03 is for overhead.

The Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee is allocated N20m.
National Industrial Court gets N5,570,000,000
  • Salary of judges – N385,267,725.30
  • Personnel – N1,691,587,053.10
  • Overhead – N1,455,147,499.60
  • Capital – N2,037,997,722.00
Federal Capital Territory High Court gets a total allocation of N6,850,000,000

*Personnel – N2,450,266,968.06
*Overhead – N2,629,345,637.38
*Capital – N1,443,296,314.00
FCT Sharia Court of Appeal gets N2,190,000,000.00

FCT Customary Court of Appeal gets a total of N2,997,500,000.00

In the same budget, the National Judicial Council is allocated the sum of N3,168,400,000; the Federal Judicial Service Commission gets N2,310,000,000 and the FCT Judicial Service Committee gets N1,180,000,000.
The National Judicial Institute gets a total of N2,764,000,000,000 and the Body of Benchers gets N340,000,000.
While the sum of N1bn is allocated to the retirement benefits of former Chief Justices of Nigeria, the sum of N1.4bn is earmarked for pension of retired judicial officers and the sum of N500m is set aside for the Information Technology Project for the Judiciary.
