An Islamic court in Bauchi State on January 16, 2014 ordered one Mubarak Ibrahim to receive 20 lashes after he was found guilty of homosexual offence.
According to British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Ibrahim committed the offence punishable by stoning to death under Islamic law about seven years ago and is now 20. Along with him were 11 other persons (made up of Christians and Muslims) who were asked to pay fines.
Homosexual acts are illegal in both Islamic and secular law and restrictions have been tightened since President Goodluck Jonathan signed into law a bill which bans same sex marriage, gay groups and public show of same sex affection.
